The seventy-ninth session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) kicks off in Bangkok

On May 15, 2023, the 79th Session of the UNESCAP began with the theme “Accelerating Climate Action for Sustainable Development” in Bangkok, Thailand. Mr. N.Ankhbayar, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, leads the delegation of Mongolia to the session.

H.E Mr. L.Oyun-Erdene, The Prime Minister of Mongolia, delivered a video address at the opening session. In his speech, he expressed gratitude to the UNESCAP on behalf of the Government of Mongolia for its long-term support to the member states in reducing poverty and overcoming challenges in regional economic development and environmental sustainability, through policy recommendations and technical cooperation.

The Prime Minister noted that the UNESCAP is making an important contribution to improving the transportation conditions of the landlocked developing countries in the region. He also emphasized that improving transportation, energy, information, and communication technology will enable landlocked countries to expand their trade, gain access to new markets, and identify a new development gateway. State Secretary, Mr. N.Ankhbayar addressed the General Debate of the session, briefing the Government of Mongolia’s ongoing policy activities and measures aimed at socioeconomic development, and served as Vice-Chair of the session.

Honourable Fekitamoeloa Katoa Utoikamanu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tonga will chair the 79th session. Vice-chairs selected for the session are Mr. Askar Zhambakin, Vice-Minister of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industries of Kazakhstan; Ms. Hyoeun Jenny Kim, Deputy Minister of Climate Change of Republic of Korea; Mr. Ankhbayar, Nyamdorj, State Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia; Mr. Rachmat Budiman, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Indonesia to ESCAP; Ms. Millicent Cruz-Paredes, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Philippines to ESCAP; and Mrs. Colonne Appuhamillage Chaminda Inoka Colonne, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to ESCAP.

The 79th session of the UNESCAP will take place from 15th to 19th May.
