According to the Article 27 of the “Partnership and Cooperation Agreement”, signed in 2013 between Mongolia and the European Union (EU) on establishing Geographical Indications agreement between Mongolia and the EU, negotiations are being held on 3-5 October, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia.
Representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice and Internal Affairs, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry, Intellectual Property Office of Mongolia, General Administration for Specialized Inspection, Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce, and the EU team led by Raimondo Serra, the Deputy head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Asia and Australia, are conducting the negotiations.
Since 2019-2022, the parties have been actively working to officially launch the Geographical Indications agreement negotiations, and jointly organized number of events including Trade and Investment Subcommittee consultations of Mongolia and the EU, and other formal and informal meetings regarding the issues of Geographical Indications.
Recently, on September 26-27, 2022, within the scope of the Resilient Ecosystem and Agriculture Management in Mongolia /STREAM/ project, the Ministry of Justice and Internal Affairs, the Intellectual Property Office of Mongolia, EU and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation /FAO/ jointly organized “Importance of Geographical Indications” conference on 26, 27 September 2022, in Ulaanbaatar.
The aim of the negotiations on the establishment of the Geographical Indications agreement between Mongolia and the EU targets the objectives of expanding the activities of enterprises, developing small and medium businesses, increasing exports of products with geographical indications to the EU market.
