CELEBRATING THE ENTRY-INTO-FORCE OF THE MILLENNIUM CHALLENGE COMPACT

A ceremony to mark the entry-into-force of the Second Compact, signed between the Government of Mongolia and the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation, and the official start of the five-year timeline to implement the Compact Program, was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia on April 5, 2021,

H.E. Mrs. Battsetseg Batmunkh, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Chair of the Board of Directors of MCA-Mongolia, and H.E. Mr. Michael S.Klecheski, U.S. Ambassador to Mongolia, opened the event addressing the audience. They were joined by Mr. B. Javkhlan, MP, Finance Minister, Mr. D. Tsogtbaatar, MP, Mr. D. Sumiyabazar, Governor of the Capital City and Mayor of Ulaanbaatar City, Mr. Alex Russin, Board Member and MCC Resident Country Director, Mrs. E. Sodontogos, CEO of MCA-Mongolia and other officials from both sides.

Under the Second Compact, the U.S. Government is to render a grant of 350mln USD, and the Government of Mongolia commits 111.8mln USD for the implementation of a comprehensive program to expand the water supply of Ulaanbaatar and to ensure sustainable social and economic development.

With the Compact’s implementation a construction of major water infrastructures, such as an Advanced Water Purification Plant and Wastewater Recycling Plant will be commenced. As a result of this project, it is estimated that the water system in Ulaanbaatar will be expanded to deliver up to 64 million m³ or 83% more drinking water than the current level, which in the long run will increase the Capital city’s water supply for another 40 years or even for 100 years.
