In the framework of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Canada, the Embassy of Mongolia to Canada and the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto organized a Conference under the theme “Mongolia-Canada Relations in Global Perspective” on October 24, 2023.
H.E. Sarantogos Erdenetsogt, Ambassador of Mongolia to Canada, Joe Wong, Vice President International at the University of Toronto, and Peter Loewen, Director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto, delivered the opening remarks at the Conference. The themes of the panel sessions were “Historical Reflections: Mongolian Studies in Canada” and “Economy, Security, and Society.”
Within the framework of the panel session “Historical Reflections: Mongolian Studies in Canada,” Professor Michael Gervers of the Department of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough, Professor Jennifer Purtle of the Department of Art History at the University of Toronto, Professor David Curtis Wright of the Department of History at the University of Calgary, and Elisabeth Rose, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Toronto, presented on the current state and future prospects for Mongol studies.
At the panel session “Economy, Security, and Society,” Munkh-Ochir Dorjjugder, Executive Office of the National Security Council of Mongolia, Deputy Chief and Director for Strategic Policy and Analysis (participated as researcher), Kongdan Oh, Korea Economic Institute of America, Jonathan Miller, MacDonald Laurier Institute, and Oyu Vasha, Minister Counsellor of the Embassy of Mongolia in Ottawa, spoke on Mongolia-Canada relations in today’s regional conditions, the importance of dialogues and opportunities for deepening cooperation between the two countries.
The Conference helped to promote and preserve Mongol studies in Canada, highlighting the history and significance of Mongolia-Canada relations and carving a path for the future cooperation.
Also, H.E. Sarantogos Erdenetsogt, Ambassador of Mongolia conferred the “Medal of Friendship” awarded by the Presidential Decree, to Professor Michael Gervers, Department of History and Cultural Studies at the University of Toronto and presented books to the Asian Institute.
